City Museum

Welcome to City Museum , where the imagination runs wild!

Housed in the 600,000 square-foot former International Shoe Company, the museum is an eclectic mixture of children's playground, funhouse, surrealistic pavilion, and architectural marvel made out of unique, found objects. The brainchild of internationally acclaimed artist Bob Cassilly, a classically trained sculptor and serial entrepreneur, the museum opened for visitors in 1997 to the riotous approval of young and old alike.

Cassilly and his longtime crew of 20 artisans have constructed the museum from the very stuff of the city; and, as a result, it has urban roots deeper than any other institutions'. Reaching no farther than municipal borders for its reclaimed building materials, City Museum boasts features such as old chimneys, salvaged bridges, construction cranes, miles of tile, and even two abandoned planes!

“City Museum makes you want to know,” says Cassilly. “The point is not to learn every fact, but to say, ‘Wow, that's wonderful.' And if it's wonderful, it's worth preserving.”

To get the most out of your visit to CITY MUSEUM, we'd like to make a few suggestions and let you know some of our rules and regulations. Familiarizing yourself with this information will ensure that your time spent with us will be comfortable, enjoyable and safe!

We'd also like to recommend that you consider wearing full-length pants or jeans, as you will want to take advantage of our multiple slides, tunnels and various attractions.

To avoid being slowed down as you explore the museum, you can drop your bulky, burdensome bag or winter-storm worthy coat at City Museum's Coat Check located on the first floor behind the elevator. While you are there you can grab a soda, some candy or a number of other refreshment items.

Some History:

The St. Louis Carousel is home to an original carousel created by the Dentzel Company of Philadelphia in the 1920's. The Carousel was installed in 1929 at the Forest Park Highlands. When the Highlands burned to the ground in 1963, the carousel was the only thing left standing. Howard C. Ohlendorf purchased the carousel to prevent it from being dismantled and donated it to St. Louis County Parks in 1965. The department operated it during the summer months at Sylvan Springs Park until 1980. The St. Louis County Historic Buildings Commission and Faust Cultural Heritage Foundation raised enough money to restore the carousel to its original beauty and installed it in a climate controlled building in Faust Park in 1987.
